Luminescent Orchestrii at the Second Story Cafe

======================================
Thursday night, 10/23/08, I attended a concert by the modern gypsy group, Luminescent Orchestrii, from Brooklyn, who played at that little slice of modern Bohemia, the Second Story Cafe, upstairs at 550 Westcott Street in Syracuse.

The group's first set leaned more towards traditional Eastern European gypsy music, with their second set venturing more towards gypsy/funk/hip-hop music, which got the college folk in the audience up and dancing.

I shot a few photos using flash, which gave the subjects that frozen-in-time look, as if they were statues.

Shooting a great many shots without flash, I got some interesting intentional blur, which I believe adds to the sense of movement. Also, I just like the way it looks, particularly when one gets an nicely balanced compostion of abstracted blurred images.

At the Third Thursday (Th3) opening and reception at the Orange Line Gallery in Syracuse on Oct. 16, 2008, I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with a young artist named Kavi.

She graciously and generously allowed me to shoot a few photos of her. Some of them are above.

Oakwood Cemetary On A Sunday Afternoon

======================================

This time of year -- mid-October -- I find Oakwood Cemetary in Syracuse to be one of the prettiest, most interesting and peaceful places in Central New York.

The monuments, the statues, the trees with their colorful leaves -- they all were a treat for my eyes, and the setting gave me a sense of calm tranquility on this sunny, blue-sky October afternoon (10/19/08).

Meetup On A Full Moon Night

========================================

The night of the full moon before Halloween!
Above are some photos I shot of the Syracuse Photography Meetup Group's monthly social get-together on that warm moonlit night.

The top photos are of Cathryn Lahm, a professional photographer, who always seems to have fun shooting candids at these get-togethers. A few other folks had their cameras with them, but I think Cathryn and I shot the most pictures between the two of us.

During the gathering, the fire alarm went off at the Parkview Hotel, where we meet in the hotel lounge. We all exited the hotel for a few minutes while fire engines arrived and fire fighters made sure the place was indeed safe to go back into.

While outside, a friendly street person, Ray, came over and started to ask questions about this and that. I shot a few photos of Ray and he invited me over to his bench in the park where he sleeps. I shot a few more photos of Ray on his bench and I gave him a dollar, asking him if it was OK for me to use the photos I was shooting of him. He said "Sure thing!".

Later, many inthe group went over to Pastabilities, where Dick Schultz currently has some of his photos on display. It was there that I had an interesting talk with Steve about photographic style and expression and self-discovery through photography. I shot a few photos of Steve, without flash, just relying on the very intense red light from the Pastabilities neon sign.

More photos, capturing beautiful variations of color in this area's vegetation.
The wide-angle vistas were shot atop Westminster Hill, about one-half mile east of Syracuse University.

Even More of Meadowbrook

======================================

Well, it is that time of year -- probably the prettiest time of the year for landscape photography here in beautiful Central New York.

Once again, I visited Meadowbrook Basin, right around the time of sunset, to capture more images of the changing light as it illuminated the changing colors of the leaves.

More of Meadowbrook

======================================
I've said it before and I'll say it again - Meadowbrook Basin is one of the prettiest sites in Central New York, especially in autumn, especially on a beautifully sunny October day with temperatures around 70 degrees.

While I was shooting photos at Meadowbrook (on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 5:30 pm), around 60 geese gathered in the pond.

I don't know if something spooked them, or maybe it was just time to go, but all of a sudden, about 40 of them took off, flying away from me.

I could actually feel the air move from all the flapping of the wings from these good-sized birds.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any photos of the gesse that I especially liked, but I did get a few others worth posting (above).

=======================================
Meadowbrook Basin is one of the loveliest places in Central New York, located on the east side of Syracuse. Above are a few photos I shot on Sunday, October 5, 2008.
I plan to return to shoot some more fall photos there in a few days.

Variations On A Model Prisoner

=======================================

On a model shoot a few weeks ago, we asked the models to pose up against a sort of chain-metal gargae window .
Visually, it reminded me of how things might appear in a cage or in prison.
The black-and-white versions of these slightly different images remind me of some kind of 1930's movie, set in Shanghai.
I like all four, but I think my fav is the closer shot in color.
